Pushing abortifacient IUDs and implants on adolescents

Planned Parenthood has long sought to control population via invasive and dangerous IUDs and contraceptive implants, but the high cost of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) safeguarded most young girls and women. In addition, horror stories about bad experiences with IUDs and contraceptive implants are so common that most women are leery of them. (See the comments on Abby Johnson's blog in response to her post "IUDs…the worst choice," for one scary story after another.) In fact, in 2009, only 8.5 percent of contracepting women and girls used LARC. Planned Parenthood is on a mission to change that.

Enter Obamacare, with its mandates for free contraception (all FDA-approved forms). And, within weeks, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) issues a committee opinion that glowingly recommends IUDs and contraceptive implants for adolescents as a first-line measure against conception!

According to Planned Parenthood, the cost of an IUD is between $500 and $1,000 up front - a real boon to Planned Parenthood's bottom line!

But does it really prevent conception?

Former Planned Parenthood facility director, Abby Johnson, writes that she once saw a tiny baby on the end of an IUD that was removed in her facility, and that Planned Parenthood's protocol is to use the IUD to abort newly conceived babies. You will find confirmation on Planned Parenthood's website that the IUD impedes implantation. Yet, Planned Parenthood says it is not an abortion if the baby has not yet implanted, incorrectly referring to the newly conceived child as a "fertilized egg." ACOG concurs, having changed its definition of conception in 1965 to the implantation of a fertilized ovum.

In a comprehensive summary about LARC, Hans E. Geisler, MD, FACOG, FACS, writes about the risks to the woman using an IUD:

The Mayo Clinic lists the side effects associated with Implanon, which ACOG mentions specifically in its report as a popular contraceptive implant option inserted in the upper arm. The side effects include abdominal or back pain, acne, increased risk of ovarian cysts, changes in vaginal bleeding, decreased sex drive, dizziness, hair loss, headaches, mild insulin resistance, mood swings and depression, nausea or upset stomach, potential interaction with other medications, sore breasts, vaginal inflammation or dryness, viral infections, and weight gain. Just what every young girl wants and needs.

Historically, while the contraceptive implants like Implanon have been provided free of charge to some low-income women, the surgery to remove them was not free, and women were saddled with the implants regardless of the amount of pain, suffering, grief, and health chaos they were causing.

The IUD must be removed by a healthcare practitioner as well, even though many women self-remove it for lack of funds to pay for the removal, risking perforation of the uterus.

With STDs at epidemic rates among teens, ACOG is encouraging IUD use for adolescents even though they are dangerous for those who currently or recently have had a sexually transmitted disease. They are painful and problematic for those who have never been pregnant - causing higher pain levels - and carry a whopping 20 percent spontaneous expulsion rate in teens. Planned Parenthood recommends them to teens because they are easy to hide. "[I]t's one of the most private methods of birth control. No one can tell you're using it. There's no packaging or other evidence that might embarrass you if found," Planned Parenthood says on its Info for Teens website. Its teen website also recommends implants like Implanon as the most effective form of birth control.

Planned Parenthood, ACOG, and the Obama administration have combined forces to wage a dangerous war on our children, and with the march toward contraceptives which cannot be easily discontinued or removed, they have ramped up the battle to the next level.

It is imperative that we act to stop the onslaught against our children by every means possible. The most immediate solution is to vote for those who would strike the HHS mandate for abortifacient contraceptives. In addition to that, we must redouble our efforts at fighting Planned Parenthood.
