A Message From Archbishop

Alexander K. Sample

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ

I wanted to just touch base with all of you again, as we come into this first weekend during which we will not have the public celebration of the Holy Eucharist. I know this is a great heartache for all of you as it is for me so I just wanted to give you a little bit of a word of encouragement and to let you know that I’m thinking about you, I’m praying for you.

As I celebrate my Mass this Sunday, which on every Sunday I’ll offer for all of the faithful of the archdiocese, I want you to know that I will be holding you very very close in my heart and in my prayers as I offer that Holy Mass. We will livestream that Mass, so any of you who want to join with me in prayer from a distance are certainly welcome to do so.

But, I also want to encourage all of you to find all those other ways that are being made available for you to still connect with the Church, still connect with your parish, with your pastor. I encourage you to check your parish website. I’m sure there’s information there on how you can continue to participate. Many of our parishes have the capacity to livestream their own Masses, so I know some of them will be doing that.

I will be having later this afternoon – this is Friday – a conference call or a video conference with all of the priests of the archdiocese to give them also a word of encouragement and to hear from them and what their concerns or suggestions might be.

So my brothers and sisters, I just didn’t feel like this weekend could come – the first weekend without Mass – without reaching out to you and letting you know how much I’m holding you in prayer, how much I love all of you and please know that you are not forgotten.

And may the blessing of Almighty God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit come down upon all of you, your families, your loved ones and be with you this day and forever.

Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon
