Ashford Institute Applied Bioethics Summer Conference

The Ashford Institute Applied Bioethics Summer Conference. This conference is open to medical students, nursing students, PA students, also graduate students in counseling, psychology, and social work. This is an intensive 6-day program June 8-13, held in Winston-Salem, NC; for students who do not have the summer off, a weekend-only option is offered on June 8-9.

Ashford Institute's purpose is to promote education and research in areas that overlap disciplines including medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, ethics, ministry and spirituality. The conference will include 17 speakers and 30 clinical, multidisciplinary topics that have some ethical aspect. A few examples of the specific topics we will include are:

1) mental health after reproductive losses including miscarriage and abortion.

2) research on faith based abortion recovery programs that are helping to decrease shame and trauma symptoms.

3) perinatal hospice - a multidisciplinary support team for parents of a fetus with a life-limiting condition, which typically includes a counselor as well as nurse, chaplain etc.

4) modern adoption which is very different from past generations, and does not always require saying good-bye forever to one's child.

5) treatment of pregnant women with addiction problems in a multi-disciplinary treatment program

6) human trafficking

7) intimate partner violence (especially the need to screen during pregnancy when risk is increased, but most of the material to be presented is pertinent at any time).

8) integration of spirituality into health care which a marjoity of patients desire.

9) issues associated with third party reproduction technologies such as egg donation, surrogacy, and sperm donation,

Ashford Institute is subsidizing about 90% of the costs to keep the registration fee low and affordable for students and faculty. The conference is being held in Winston-Salem, NC.
