As we approach the 40th anniversary of the abominable Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions that have led to the slaughter of more than 53 million tiny innocent human beings, I thought I'd highlight an interesting anecdote from Monica Migliorino Miller's excellent book Abandoned: The Untold Story of the Abortion Wars (which has been featured in this column previously).

Metropolitan was a non-descript two-story building near the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and 27th Street in a somewhat run-down neighborhood close to downtown Milwaukee, surrounded by lots of apartment buildings and old homes in need of paint and repair. It was one of the few abortion clinics that offered no other services except abortion. When it first opened, just after the Roe v. Wade decision, three doctors took turns doing the abortions: Neville Sender, George Woodward and Nathan Hildrich.

Of the three, Sender was certainly the most committed to the abortion practice. He had boasted to the Milwaukee Journal that he had performed illegal abortions before Roe v. Wade, and he shocked pro-lifers when he told the Journal: 'Of course we know it's killing, but the state permits killing in certain circumstances.' Sender enjoyed harassing the protestors and sidewalk counselors outside of his clinic and made a regular practice of heaping insults and obscenities on the pro-lifers who faithfully assembled outside Metropolitan.

Carol Robbins was one of the most faithful sidewalk counselors at Metropolitan. She could be seen standing in front of the building nearly every day that the abortion clinic was open. Once in July, 1991, a good-looking young man strolled past her, stopping for a moment to look at a sign which displayed photos of aborted babies in the first trimester. Carol went over to him and gave him some pro-life literature which also showed aborted babies.

The young man looked at the pictures. 'What do you think about that?' Carol asked him. 'Hum,' the man said. 'It makes me hungry.'

Three weeks later, the young man was arrested. When Carol saw the television news clips about his arrest, she gasped. The man was Jeffrey Dahmer who, over a period of thirteen years, had killed seventeen men. He cut up the bodies of his victims, dissolved the flesh, stored the skulls, kept body parts in his refrigerator and engaged in cannibalism. Dahmer lived in a dilapidated apartment building only two blocks away from Metropolitan....
