Dhananjay Jagannathan teaches philosophy at Columbia. His essays on music, politics, religion, and literature have appeared in Plough, Comment, and Commonweal, and he co-writes the Substack newsletter The Line of Beauty with the novelist Tara Isabella Burton. His first book, Aristotle?s Practical Epistemology, was published by Oxford University Press in 2024. His next book, Culture as Conversation, concerns cultural identity and cultural appropriation and will be published by Penguin Press in 2026.
In order to understand and evaluate claims about artificial intelligence, we need a satisfying theory of mind that can account both for the intelligent capacities of human beings and those of actual and possible beings that are significantly unlike us.
