HLI was founded thirty-five years ago - even before Roe v. Wade - primarily to defend the sanctity of marriage from the degradation of birth control. HLI's Founder, Fr. Paul Marx, OSB, studied contraception carefully and saw the abortion plague coming as an inevitable wave of death that follows in the train of the promiscuity generated by birth control. He predicted with deadly accuracy that the fruit of birth control would be legalized abortion. He knew that contraception was the instrument wielded by the abortion promoters against the sanctity of the marital act and that it would just be a matter of time before suction machines and scalpels would be wielded against babies.

What Fr. Marx saw in the 60s with the foresight of a prophet, we now see with the sobering hindsight of the culture of death. Birth control has indeed led to abortion in every country of the world where it is accepted and practiced and is still the precursor of abortion in those countries where the killing is not yet legal. Fr. Marx used to say, "When you sow contraception, you reap abortion." How true.

It is HLI's mission, then, to address the root cause of abortion by challenging contraception everywhere we can. You and I, consecrated men of the Church, are the stewards of the Church's long-standing teaching on contraception. We are the ones who must communicate and witness this teaching to our dear people, not only to help them avoid killing babies - that is, of course, fundamental - but more importantly, to help them avoid killing their very souls through the sin of contraception!

And so, in this year of the 40th anniversary of Humanae Vitae, the papal encyclical on birth control, I would like to offer you this email newsletter dedicated to a deeper analysis of the teaching of the Church on birth control and its many manifestations. From now until July 25th, 2008, the anniversary of the encyclical, HLI will send to all interested priests, deacons and seminarians this e-newsletter called Humanae Vitae Priests. It is dedicated to forming in us the "mind of Christ" concerning the Church's teaching and is meant to fortify our souls in our duty as priests to give the full teaching of Christ to our people. My good friend, John Mallon, a long-standing champion of Humanae Vitae, will edit this publication and help me provide for you many gifts in this one publication:

This all sounds like an ambitious plan, I know, but brother, you are worth it! It's time to take back our Church from the dissenters - and there is no better papal teaching than Humanae Vitae to use as our banner!

I also encourage you to pass this on to other brother priests and seminarians so that we can spread our counter-revolution of conscience throughout the ranks of the faithful clergy and the People of God.
