Greetings from LifeIssues.net (www.lifeissues.net)

Dear Friends for Life,

Chile and Birth Control Pills: Chile's Constitutional Court has outlawed distribution of emergency contraceptive pills in public health clinics. In September 2006, President Michelle Bachelet ruled that such pills should be given to teenagers free in order to reduce the teen birth rate. Since such distribution began, similar to experience in other countries, the rate has not dropped.

Vienna Austria - Chimpanzees, Legal Persons? Austrian animal rights activists have tried to have a chimpanzee legally declared a person. That country's Supreme Court rejected the request. These animal right's people have now taken their case to the European Court of Human Rights.

Breast feeding limits arthritis? Research at Sweden's Malmo University Hospital reports that mothers who have more children, and especially if they breast feed, have a significantly lower risk of arthritis later in life. Oral contraceptives on the other hand offered no benefit. Breast feeding for more than a year reduced the risk of rheumatoid arthritis by 54% and if even for one month reduced the risk 26%, while each successive child decreased the risk by an additional 13%.

God Bless,

Jerry Novotny, OMI

Quote of the Week - "Even in the midst of difficulties and uncertainties, every person sincerely open to truth and goodness can, by the light of reason and the hidden action of grace, come to recognize in the natural law written in the heart (cf. Rom. 2:14-15) the sacred value of human life from its very beginning until its end, and can affirm the right of every human being to have this primary good respected to the highest degree. Upon the recognition of this right, every human community and the political community itself are founded." --Gospel of Life #2

ITEM #1. Antidepressants 'may harm sperm'

Drugs taken by millions of men to alleviate depression may affect their fertility, say US scientists. A small number of healthy men given the antidepressant paroxetine for four weeks had far higher levels of sperm with damaged DNA.

ITEM #2. Undergraduates warned against sexual immorality

A medical doctor with the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, Ondo State, Dr. Ayodele Ajewole, has advised students of Achievers University, Owo to protect themselves against the Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, scourge by avoiding sexual immorality. "Last year alone, 4.3 million people were infected by HIV, 3.4 million of who were adults, while about 0.5 million were children. Also in 2007, over 2.9 million people lost their lives to the deadly scourge but these were only reported cases. Africa now has 12 million orphans to cater for as a result of the scourge," he said.

ITEM #3. Realities of HIV/AIDS - Diary of an HIV-positive, pregnant girl

As Gabrielle's pregnancy progresses, she is plagued by the thought that her unborn baby could be born HIV positive.

She said the biggest challenge is that all the odds are stacked against the baby. But she is hoping for the best and she takes the necessary precautions. She told Flair that she envies mothers who have children who are HIV negative.

"They don't know how blessed they are that they don't have anything to worry about. They take for granted the simple pleasures of even breastfeeding, something I can never do," said Gabrielle sadly.

ITEM #4. New Study Shows More Contraception, Birth Control Don't Reduce Abortions

A leading pro-life advocate says the new study released by the Alan Guttmacher Institute proves to her that the promotion of birth control and contraception don't reduce abortions. Wendy Wright, the head of Concerned Women for America, says more abstinence education is needed.

AGI, the research arm of Planned Parenthood, released a new report showing that abortions are done at higher rates on black, poor, and older women. At the same time, it shows that young women who are in college or slightly older or younger obtain the highest number of abortions.

ITEM #5. The Vindication of Humanae Vitae

Let's begin by meditating upon what might be called the first of the secular ironies now evident: Humanae Vitae's specific predictions about what the world would look like if artificial contraception became widespread. The encyclical warned of four resulting trends: a general lowering of moral standards throughout society; a rise in infidelity; a lessening of respect for women by men; and the coercive use of reproductive technologies by governments.

ITEM #6. Humanae Vitae and Making Babies.

July 25, 1968 is the date of Paul VI's encyclical Humanae Vitae, in which he affirmed: "there is an inseparable connection, willed by God and unable to be broken by man on his own initiative, between the two meanings of the conjugal act: the unitive meaning and the procreative meaning" (no.12). This meaning is severed by contraception and also by the new modes of generating human life in the laboratory: artificial insemination by a donor (better expressed as "artificial insemination by a vendor"), in vitro fertilization, cloning, and other artificial reproductive technologies (ARTs).

ITEM #7. Homosexuality is a moral disease

Abnormal sexual preference, even when it becomes enormalf to an individual due to abnormal circumstances can be controlled. Just because certain individuals experience sexual desires towards members of the same sex, because something went wrong in their lives does mean that that their behaviour should be accepted.

ITEM #8. Brave young mum's cancer battles

A woman in Britain postponed chemotherapy for her unborn child's sake. Ms Janine Long, who has had three types of cancer, said: "[W]hen you are given a choice of your child's life or your own life, your child comes first. Motherly instincts are the most powerful thing in the whole world. I couldn't have given [her son Logan's] life up for [any] reason.

ITEM #9. Russia Sees 64 Percent of Its Pregnancies End in Abortion, Causing Infertility Issues

Russia has long been a world leader in terms of the percentage of pregnancies that end in abortion and experts say those figures are still high. They say the abortion epidemic is leading to a problem of hundreds of thousands of women suffering from infertility.

ITEM #10. More Research Needed On Post-abortion Trauma

It still shocks me that in a wonderful country like New Zealand with so much to offer every one of us, our politicians can deny that we have abortion on demand when we have 18,000 abortions every year. The large number of my friends telling me their stories of pain motivated me to learn as much as possible so that I could understand the post-traumatic stress they were experiencing.

ITEM #11. Parenting "Rights" For Homosexuals: How We Got There And Its Implications For All Families

The California Supreme Court decided several weeks ago that doctors specializing in assisted reproductive technologies may not assert their religious freedom as a defense to California's Civil Rights law requirement that businesses provide services without discrimination on the basis of clients' sexual orientation. A fertility clinic willing to treat heterosexual patients must therefore also treat homosexual patients.

ITEM #12. What Consummates the Nuptial Bond and Why Homosexuals Cannot Marry

Many same-sex couples ardently desire to have their unions recognized as true marriages. A substantial number of people in our society believe that this desire ought to be honored. They and same-sex couples with this desire also think that opposition to the public recognition of the marital character of their relationship is an unjust prejudice. They firmly believe that same-sex couples can live in a committed relationship and have a right to seal their commitment in marriage. They emphasize that the actual capacity to generate children is not necessary for a valid marriage; after all, opponents of same-sex marriage acknowledge the validity of the marriages of men and women known to be sterile and incapable of having children. It seems that the principal reason why some oppose same-sex marriage is simply unreasonable prejudice.
