"Despite the huge advances which have been made recently, there is no guarantee for the success of stem cell therapy," it says, which is medically true. But the next sentence is more concerning: "Nevertheless, every week we see this new 'medicine' helping a lot of people and improving the quality of life of many patients." <div id="archived_message_body"> <big>Dear Friends For Life,</big> <big>Janet E. Smith shares the following insight on a natural law/common sense argument against contraception. She states that many people think that Catholic Church's opposition to contraception is some weird religious discipline. But the fact is that the Church's teaching on contraception over the centuries has been defended primarily as a natural law teaching. That means that the truth of the teaching on contraception (that it is incompatible with the goods of sexuality) can be defended on the basis of facts we all can know about what makes for human happiness. I wrote this essay some time ago and so some of the data is out of date (for instance, now 42% of all babies are born out of wedlock, not 22%) but the argument still holds. This is a good primer for natural law principles and for a common sense argument against contraception. Dr. Smith asks us to think about each one of these as a concrete moral fact: when we see the heartbreak and social dysfunction associated with out-of-wedlock births, don't our immediate and natural moral perceptions and judgments says "something is wrong here"; when we learn that a woman has had an abortion, no matter what our view of the morality of abortion, don't we say "something has gone wrong here?"; when we hear of a divorce and all the surrounding heartbreak and dysfunctionality, don't we think, "something has gone wrong here?" When we see young people dying of AIDS, don't we think, "something has gone wrong here?" Spring has finally arrived here on the Japanese Islands. The Cherry blossoms were beautiful this year; however, the sad part is that the season is short - only two, three weeks long and the spring winds and rains made it even shorter. Today the sun is shinning but tonight heavy rains are predicted. The good news today is Embryonic Stem Cell Research has been halted. Geron, the California company that was the first to get US Food and Drug Administration approval for human trials with cells derived from embryonic stem cells, has decided to shut down the trials. This means that one of the two companies experimenting on live human embryos has decided to withdraw from the field. Also some good news for mom. Fetal Cells stay with Mom for life. A recent National Public Radio morning edition program featured scientist Robert Krulwich. In his report on fetal maternal microchimerism, he reports that there is increased evidence "when a woman has a baby, she gets not just a son or a daughter, but an army of protective cells—gifts from her children that will stay inside her and defend her for the rest of her life." So her teary farewell when her child goes to college and her admonition that "you will always be part of me" is turning out to be scientifically correct. Thank you for all you do to protect life. The birth control pill works in three ways:     1. It can prevent the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation). However, while using the pill, women can and do experience breakthrough ovulation - meaning that an egg is released from the ovary and is available to be fertilized by the sperm.     2. It also causes the cervical mucus to thicken, making it difficult for the sperm to reach the egg. It is possible, though, for the sperm to break through the mucus and to fertilize the egg.     3. It also changes the lining of the uterus. This makes it difficult, if not impossible, for the five- to seven-day-old baby to attach to the lining, where he/she would receive the nourishment needed to grow. If the baby does not successfully attach to the lining, he/she dies and is expelled from the body during menstruation. This process is known as a chemical abortion. The fact that it can occur as a result of taking birth control pills is why the pill is referred to as an abortifacient. The pill has as its goal rendering intercourse sterile or, alternatively, making it impossible for the newly created child to live. Its chemical composition has a profound negative impact on the bonding and relationship of the couple as well. Thus, the use of the pill strips marriage of its meaning and purpose because marriage and conjugal love are ordered by nature and by God toward two ends: Procreation and Strengthening the love between the spouses, creating society's most important community, the family, in which to raise children. <big>Dear Friends For Life,</big> <big>The mighty abortion company Planned Parenthood is under scrutiny in the United States and gradually cracks are beginning to appear. Abby Johnson, former director of the Planned Parenthood facility in Bryan/College Station, Texas, has filed a <a href="http://www.stopp.org/article.php?id=10151">whistle blower lawsuit</a> against her former employer. She alleges a "pernicious and persistent" pattern of Medicaid fraud. Abby says in the suit that Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas filed at least 87,075 fraudulent Medicaid claims and collected in excess of $5.7 million from Medicaid to reimburse services which were never performed or not covered by Medicaid. She alleges that approximately 40 percent of the claims submitted by PP Gulf Coast for reimbursement from the Texas WHP program over a two-year period were "false, fraudulent and/or ineligible for reimbursement." New Hampshire Right to Life (NHRTL) received some vindication when a federal judge recently ordered the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) <a href="http://www.stopp.org/article.php?id=10152">to release records</a> about a $1 million grant that was awarded to Planned Parenthood. NHRTL has waited more than five months for the records, which it says were required by law to be delivered within 20 working days of the request. The judge said the documents must be released by April 1.   Tony Thornton, the CEO of Planned Parenthood of Lubbock, Texas, was arrested on March 12 for <a href="http://www.stopp.org/article.php?id=10153">indecent exposure</a> at a local baseball field, which is reputed to be a homosexual cruising spot. The police report lists a 43-year-old male as the victim. It did not state whether any children were present. And Planned Parenthood closes for the day during 40 Days for Life vigil. <big>Dear Friends For Life,</big> <big>[Breast Cancer from Abortion] - A new study from Johns Hopkins University and the American University of Armenia by scientists who examined diabetes type 2 reproductive factors in breast cancer found a statistically significant association showing a 2.9 fold increased breast cancer risk from one induced abortion. Women with pregnancies before age 20 had no increase breast cancer risk, whereas those age 21 to 30 had a 2.2 fold increased risk, and after age 30 a five fold increased risk from delaying pregnancy. When health is absent, the physician assists nature in restoring health and when necessary, he steps in and does for nature what nature would do for herself if she could, as in necessary surgery. <big>Dear Friends For Life,</big> <big>[International Protect Life Award For Chile] - Over 30 NGO leaders active at the United Nations praised Chile for having the lowest maternal mortality rate in all of Latin America. In a communication to President Pinera announcing the group's decision to designate its International Protect Life Award to the people of Chile, the leaders celebrated that more Chilean women have safely delivered their babies than ever before. The committee announced the award at the UN during the 2011 Meeting of the UN Commission on Status of Women, and emphasized the importance the UN places on reducing maternal mortality within the UN Millennium Development Goals. The leaders also referenced the ways Chile, through its constitution and other programs, provided for care and protection of the child before birth. Specifically mentioned was that the "Chile Crece Contigo" ("Chile Grows With You") program begun by former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet and meant to advocate for the well-being and protection of young children, has always included strong awareness that the unborn child is a member of the family. Also mentioned by the NGO leaders was the new "Comprometidos por la Vida" ("Committed to Life") program announced by President Pinera to offer assistance to pregnant women in difficult circumstances in order to carry their babies to term. <big>Dear Friends For Life,</big> <big>"Post-Abortion Stress and Depression" - In the British Journal of Psychiatry (Sept. 11) a published study reviewed results of all studies from 6 countries between 1991 and 2009 which covered 877, 000 women. This well-documented study concluded that 10% of mental health problems reported among women may be attributable to having had an abortion. This includes 35% of those with suicidal behaviors. It pointed out that abortion survivors are 81% more likely to experience mental health problems compared to all other control groups, and 55% more likely compared to women who have delivered an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy. Emotional disturbances following included a wide range of post-abortion emotional problems. After examining this study, it seems clear that those who deny the existence of post-abortion stress (usually for political reasons) no longer have any factual basis for such a claim. "South Korea" - At It Again: Professor Park Se-pill at Jeju National University is attempting to clone human embryos again.
