Lifeissues Newsletter #547

Date: October 14th 2011

Dear Friends For Life,

Irish abortions continue to decline. From a high of 6,673 Irish abortions in 2001, abortions have declined by 34%. In 2010, 4,404 Irish women traveled to Britain for abortions. That number has been declining. The abortion rate in Ireland is now 4.4 per 1,000 females age 15-44. This compares to England's 17.5 per 1,000 female residents. Further there is no evidence of an increase of Irish women going either to the continent or to England for abortions.

Parental notification laws definitely reduce abortions. Michael New has recently published a comprehensive study of abortion laws which demonstrate the effectiveness of pro-life laws. Looking at it over a period of 21 years it gives solid evidence that abortion funding restrictions, parental involvement laws, and informed consent laws all effectively lower abortion rates, e.g. parental involvement reduces it by 15%.

Warning, Hospice May Abandon Patient! The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) has just released a new position in which it basically abdicates its professional responsibility to the patient. On the question of physician-assisted suicide it now assumes a position of "studied neutrality." It states, "as for severe suffering a patient may ask his physician for assistance in ending his life." But experience in Holland and Oregon is consistent. Patients requesting assisted-suicide do so because of loss of autonomy, fear of being a burden, etc. it is rare for them to ask for death because of pain. Pain can be controlled. So the AAHPM is to be roundly condemned for this new position. For those of you with loved ones in hospices, watch carefully.

God Bless,
Jerry Novotny, OMI

(HIV/AIDS): "Uganda Shows Contraceptives Not the Answer to HIV/AIDS" -  The fatal danger of relentlessly pushing contraceptives on Uganda and other African countries was laid bare recently in an alarming new report showing that the most popular contraceptive in Eastern and Southern Africa may actually double the risk of contracting HIV. After experiencing success in combating HIV/AIDS in Uganda through an anti-contraception initiative, it's not surprising to hear that contraceptives are part of, and not a solution to, the problem.

ITEM #1: The Trouble with "free" birth control

Entirely too often, we Catholics and other people of faith find ourselves on the defensive when it comes to controversial issues such as abortion, embryonic stem cell research, same-sex marriage, etc. We can forget that Catholicism is based on natural moral law and the innate sense of right and wrong written in every rational heart. It's not surprising, then, when objective facts and consequences support what the Church teaches. The issue of "free" birth control is a case in point. Even without the strong moral, psychological and spiritual arguments against "free" birth control, the facts speak for themselves.

****************************************

ITEM #2: End Child Pornography: Enforce Adult Pornography Laws

Ending child pornography is as much a matter of vigorously prosecuting those who distribute adult pornography as it is a matter of prosecuting child pornographers. Presidential candidates should pledge to initiate adult pornography criminal cases and fund research into the adult-child pornography link.

****************************************

ITEM #3: Targeting Down Syndrome by Regulation

Are pro-life students being unfairly flagged during interviews for medical school? A professor at Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, believes they are.

****************************************

ITEM #4: Embryonic cloning experiment blasted by ethicists, scientists

NA recent experiment cloning human embryos for potential stem cell use did little to advance a medical breakthrough and violated human life, Catholic experts said in reaction to the news.

****************************************

ITEM #5: Abortion and Mental Health Controversy Reignited by New Study

David Reardon has posted a video that (1) discusses the main findings of the study, (2) provides a brief tutorial on interpreting the graphs confidence intervals shown in the study, and (3) describes how the APA Task Force on Abortion and Mental Health fashioned a very nuanced statement to summarize it's findings in a way that obscured the truth and ensured misreporting of the evidence by the majore media (begins at the 10 minute mark.)

Study Confirms Abortion Negatively Impacts Women's Health

****************************************

ITEM #6: Organ donation: crossing the line

Linking the "right to die" with organ donation has opened a terrible Pandora's Box.

****************************************

ITEM #7 Irving Comments on Recent Human Cloning Article (CNA)

A recent experiment cloning human embryos for potential stem cell use did little to advance a medical breakthrough and violated human life, Catholic experts said in reaction to the news. (The following comment was posted on CNA by Dr. Dianne N. Irving, M.A., Ph.D.)

****************************************

ITEM #8: Where is the worst place in the world to be a doctor?

Could there be a worse place in the world to be a doctor than the Netherlands? Not because of the standard of its health care; it has one of the highest life expectancies in the world and one of the lowest infant mortality rates. But because the professional association of Dutch physicians has decreed that euthanasia is an integral part of a doctor's job.

****************************************

ITEM #9: Purity: Youth Restored

Modern man is like Marcus. He no longer knows what his body is for. He has no sense of the integrity of the person, body and soul, as cooperating with God in the making of new life. He has at best a hazy view of the eternal love for which we are made. He is hungry and cold.

****************************************

ITEM #10: Does the Catholic Church Have Doubts About Brain Death?

The Catholic Church has long acknowledged the role of the medical professional in declaring death.

****************************************

ITEM #11: Legal Australian brothels linked to human trafficking, sex slavery and organized crime

In many countries where prostitution has been legalized, governments already have or are currently reconsidering their decision after rates of child prostitution, sex trafficking and organized crime increased dramatically.

****************************************

ITEM #12: 99% of people with Down syndrome say they are happy: so why are most Down's babies aborted?

October was National Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Fittingly, the American Journal of Medical Genetics recently published groundbreaking research that challenges conventional wisdom about raising a child with Down syndrome (DS). Responding to these studies, noted bioethicist Art Caplan predicted that, nevertheless, they will not "make a bit of difference to parents deciding to end pregnancies once is discovered in the fetus." Actual experience contradicts Caplan's pessimism.
