Swedish Lutherans Vote For Same-sex Union Ceremony In Every Parish

October 30, 2009 — Over the objections of half of the nation’s Lutheran bishops, the General Synod of the Church of Sweden has approved a homosexual marriage ceremony. While individual clergy are free not to perform the ceremony, every parish in the nation must conduct it, making use of visiting clergy if necessary.

87% of Sweden’s 9.1 million residents are Lutheran; 1.5% are Catholic.
