Protect Faith-based Organizations! Urge Your Senators To Oppose Bad Language In A Funding Bill That Targets Pro-life And Pro-family Groups

Tony Perkins

Dear Jerry,

Tomorrow, the Senate is scheduled to vote on an appropriations package that could increase funding for pro-abortion groups!

Senator Shaheen (D-NH) has offered an amendment to the State and Foreign Operations Appropriations bill that would increase funding by $57.5 million for domestic organizations that promote abortions abroad. While the Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance, or “Mexico City Policy,” bans taxpayer funding for pro-abortion groups from other countries, domestic groups that openly and actively promote abortions overseas have received $61 million of this funding last year alone!

Not only does this amendment provide extra funding for abortion advocates, but it would also codify an Obama-era regulation that hinders faith-based groups from receiving contracts from USAID. Including this amendment in the appropriations bill is a clear way for Democrats to target pro-life and pro-family organizations.

By offering this amendment, Democrats broke a bipartisan budget agreement made with President Trump and congressional leadership to not inject any funding increases or policy changes into the appropriations process. This controversial provision is now holding the Senate up from passing other funding bills for key government agencies.

This is also important because appropriations bill text and funding levels set a new “baseline” for the following year. If the Shaheen Amendment becomes law, we will have higher levels of pro-abortion funding, and more requirements threatening contractors’ religious liberty, as the new norm for appropriations bills. These funding levels have stayed the same since 2012; they should not be raised now.

Your Senators need to hear from you! Please call your Senators at (202) 224-3121 and urge them to OPPOSE the Shaheen Amendment to the State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill!
