Gorsuch Confirmed To U.S. Supreme Court!

Sharon Slater

Dear Friend of the Family,

The Senate today confirmed Circuit Court Judge Neil Gorsuch to fill the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court. This confirmation is particularly significant because Gorsuch has shown that he will fulfill the role envisioned by the founders of the Republic that judges should faithfully interpret laws and the United States Constitution, rather than “legislate from the bench.”

The confirmation of Judge Gorsuch restores the balance that existed on the high court before the death of Justice Antonin Scalia and fulfils one of President Trump’s campaign pledges to nominate a justice who will be faithful to the proper role of the courts.

Because for the first time in U.S. history, Senate Democrats mounted a filibuster against a Supreme Court nominee (which would have required 60 votes to allow the Senate to even proceed to a vote on the nomination), the GOP was required to change the Senate rules on filibustering Supreme Court nominees to return the Senate to the way it has traditionally dealt with these nominations.

Gorsuch’s confirmation will still mean that the nine-member court will have a liberal, judicial-activist leaning majority on many significant issues such as marriage, life, religious liberty and others. However, it is certainly a major victory because it begins to restore balance in defense of these values and freedoms and could lead to additional similar nominations by Trump given that several justices on the bench already are older than the average retirement age for the high court.

Judge Gorsuch will be sworn in on Monday.
